A Local Favourite
First established in the ealy’s 80’s by Lawrence D’Arcy, the first incarnation of the business was actually in the main street of Ocean Grove, (The Terrace).
Originally called Mexican Graffiti, uber cool and ’80s-esque with a menu well ahead of it’s time, the restaurant soon became the go-to place for locals. After a few years of successful operation the opportunity to grow presented itself and the business moved to where it is located today.
Frank Filia was brought on board for the move and the building formerly “Finnigans”, as well as the land at the rear of the building (which was once a zoo) was purchased and their expansion was on the horizon.
This change of location called for a change of name and ‘The Mex’ was born. A move that proved popular with locals and holiday makers alike.
After a successful few years of operation, the owners took things up a notch, relocating the business to a more prominent spot (the current location), and opening with a restaurant that consisted of only one main dining area.
The move proved to be a hit with the locals, and the bar was added to the building as the restaurant quickly grew in popularity.
Fast forward to December 2015 – Aaron D’Arcy (the son of founding owner Laurie) and his great mate Dane Jackson reopened the Mex with a new vision – to take the Mex to even greater heights than its glory days.
Since, the venue has undergone a transformation – refurbishments, renovations, and redesigns, including the addition of a completely modernised bar area to bring the venue to life.
And there’s more exciting changes to come. Stay tuned…
